Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of connective tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes irritated or overloaded.

The plantar fascia connects the heel bone to the toes and supports the arch of the foot. When repetitive stress occurs, small microtears may develop in the tissue.

As a result, pain usually appears in the heel, especially during the first steps in the morning.

Common Symptoms

Typical symptoms of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Sharp heel pain after waking up
  • Pain after long periods of standing
  • Foot stiffness in the morning
  • Discomfort after prolonged walking or running

Risk Factors

Several factors increase the risk of plantar fasciitis:

  • Prolonged standing
  • Obesity
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Poor footwear
  • Sudden increase in physical activity

Early Management

Physiotherapy management usually focuses on:

  • Stretching the plantar fascia
  • Calf muscle flexibility
  • Foot strengthening exercises
  • Load management and footwear advice

Early treatment helps reduce pain and prevent chronic heel problems.
