Genu varum, or bowlegs, is a condition where the legs curve outward, causing the knees to remain apart even when the ankles touch. It’s common in toddlers and usually resolves on its own, but if it persists beyond age three, it may signal underlying issues such as rickets, Blount’s disease, or skeletal dysplasia. Symptoms can include knee pain, gait changes, or worsening curvature, and diagnosis typically involves clinical evaluation such as measuring the gap between the knees (intercondylar distance measurement), observing walking patterns, and sometimes taking X-rays. Mild cases often improve naturally, but treatment may include nutritional supplements, bracing, or, in severe cases, surgical correction through osteotomy. Early intervention is key to improving mobility, preventing progressive deformity, and reducing the risk of long-term joint problems.
