What is lordosis? Lordosis refers to an excessive inward curvature of the lower (lumbar) spine. While a mild inward curve is normal, exaggerated curvature may lead to postural imbalance and back discomfort.
Lordosis can develop due to poor posture, muscle imbalance, obesity, pregnancy, spondylolisthesis, or spinal conditions. It may cause lower back pain, stiffness, and visible arching of the lower spine. In severe cases, individuals may experience difficulty standing upright for long periods.
Diagnosis involves physical examination and, if required, imaging studies to assess spinal alignment. Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause. Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening core and gluteal muscles, stretching tight hip flexors, and correcting posture.
Early correction helps prevent chronic lower back problems and improves functional movement.
