Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that gradually damages the articular cartilage of the knee. As the cartilage wears away, the bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

It commonly affects older adults but may also occur in younger individuals due to obesity, previous knee injuries, repetitive joint stress, or genetic predisposition.

Common Symptoms

  • Knee pain during walking or climbing stairs
  • Morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes
  • Swelling around the knee
  • Crepitus (grating sensation during movement)
  • Reduced knee range of motion

Role of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy aims to:

  • Reduce pain
  • Improve joint mobility
  • Strengthen surrounding muscles
  • Improve walking and daily activities
  • Delay functional decline

Early rehabilitation helps maintain independence and improve quality of life.
